The opposition Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) thinks that the construction of the R2 dual carriageway should be speeded up by five years and should be fully completed in 2012 instead of the planned deadline 2017. SMK vice chairman and the chairman of the party's national board Ivan Farkas reminded that building this dual carriageway would contribute towards prosperity of the region along the Ipel river, which is one of the least developed regions in the south of Slovakia. The SMK is preparing a concept for the development of transport infrastructure in southern Slovakia, namely from Bratislava to Kralovsky Chlmec, while attention should be focused on transport infrastructure between the region along the river of Ipel and the region of Gemer. The development of this economically underdeveloped region is conditioned on investments into production activities and construction of roads. Due to the current situation around 24,000 people from southern Slovakia commute to work to Hungary every day.
Moreover, he suggests renewing bridges across the river of Ipel between Slovakia and Hungary, since only four bridges are in use out of the original 47 bridges. In this connection he welcomes the plan approved by the Slovak and Hungarian government to build two bridges across the Ipel river, which will connect the villages Raros - Rarospuszta and Petov -- Szecseny.
