In May, Prime Minister and SMER-Social Democracy (SMER-SD) leader Robert Fico remains Slovakia's most trustworthy politician. He has the trust of 37.3 percent of respondents. The Statistics Office's Institute for Public Opinion Research (UVVM) surveyed the popularity of Slovak politicians between May 1 and 10. Respondents could name up to three personalities on the Slovak political scene whom they trust, according to their own selection, so the resulting percentage does not add up to hundred.
Slovakia's second most popular politician is leader of the ruling Slovak National Party (SNS) Jan Slota, when 14 percent said they trust him. Interior Minister Robert Kalinak placed third backed by 9.1 percent. He overtook President Ivan Gasparovic who has the trust of 9 percent of those polled. In a month his trustworthiness decreased by 5 percentage points. The trust in former Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) chairman Bela Bugar posted a decrease from May but with 8.3 percent he is among the five most trusted politicians in Slovakia. The popularity of the People's Party -- Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS) leader Vladimir Meciar also declined from April. In May 8.2 percent of those polled trust him. Head of the opposition the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU-DS) Mikulas Dzurinda has the trust of 6.4 percent.
The survey found that 22.3 percent of those polled in early May trust nobody on the local political scene.
